Encore étudiante au Conservatoire, Nelly Alard rencontre à Paris le cinéaste indépendant Henry Jaglom, de retour du festival de Cannes en compagnie d’Orson Welles, et découvre ses films pour la plupart inédits en France. Quelques années plus tard, elle décide de tourner un documentaire sur lui. Réalisé avec de tout petits moyens, en vidéo et en anglais, On the tracks of a filmmaker est un portrait du cinéaste, mais raconte aussi les mésaventures d’une jeune Française venue tourner à Hollywood son premier film. On y croise Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, Karen Black, Peter Bogdanovitch, Bob Rafelson et aussi Orson Welles, dans des images enregistrées sur le tournage de son dernier film en tant qu’acteur.
