Lors d'un séjour en Suisse, Adam, un professeur d'université américain, rencontre Patricia, une secrétaire britannique divorcée, où qu'ils aillent. D'abord, leurs voitures entrent en collision. Puis ils se percutent sur une piste de ski, se cassant chacun une jambe. Entre leurs nombreuses querelles, ils développent le désir et l'amour. Ils se marient à la hâte, mais les désaccords persistent. Patricia décide de partir, alors Adam décide de simuler un suicide. Ils se perdent et se retrouvent, encore et encore.
