A Dog's Day

May 16, 2001
A local ruler bows down to the pressure from democratic forces and is forced to hand over a part of his province to a democratically elected leader. He also presents his pet dog to a poor peasant and his wife. For the poor peasant and his wife, the dog is not a mere dog, but a symbol of the royalty which had always inspired in them feelings of respect, admiration and blind worship. They bathe the dog in a very ceremonious manner and take much care of it. They even desist from tying it up. But when the dog bites and kills a duck and then a boy, it leads to problems. The democratic leader orders the arrest of the dog, followed by the arrest of the poor peasant. Then follow protests, talks, negotiations leading to more interesting developments.

Lucy Tsak Tsak

Oct 24, 2001
Homage to a person who claps the slate before each take of a film. We see the hands of a film editor cutting away the initial frame of strips of film; then we see a montage of these outtakes: a woman with long black hair claps the slate board at the start of take after take. She is Lucy, she calls the slate "tsak tsak." We hear Lucy's clap at least 55 times for the film "Tuvalu" (1999). Rolling credits at the end tell us of her career: for more than 30 years, 56 feature films, 3 documentaries, two series, 7200 claps of the slate for each film, nearly half a million claps, and over 382 hours of her image on film - without appearing in a single motion picture, until now.

3 Mo Tenors

Jul 28, 2001
Thomas Young, Roderick Dixon, and Victor Trent Cook do not have the level of name recognition enjoyed by the other three tenors, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti, but in this concert, taped for a Great Performances telecast, they show spectacular depth and a variety of talents. They begin with opera, sharing solos in "La donna e mobile," and other operatic material is included--notably "Nessun dorma," which is one of Pavarotti's signature tunes, and "Ah! mes amis" from La Fille du Regiment, with its formidable series of high Cs. But a livelier agenda is established with "Let the Good Times Roll," and the program expands to include pop, blues, Broadway, spirituals, and even a touch of patriotism in "America the Beautiful." Cook has the biggest show-stopper: Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher." --Joe McLellan
